depending on the layout of the hole I would almost suggest a spring loaded arm that drags along the ground all the way to the hole that the egg has to fall in. As soon as the arm enters the hole it could trigger something to stop the vehicle and/or release the egg

When the boat hits the depression it'll drop/bounce and the egg will tumble off and down to the reactor. haven't you ever dropped an egg into a pot of boiling water? They rarely break.

haven't you ever dropped an egg into a pot of boiling water? They rarely break.
A cold egg dropped into boiling water will almost always crack from thermal stress. You always put the egg in cold water, then heat to a boil to avoid breaking the egg.
