I've been slowly replacing all mine with the CFL bulbs. They last a lot longer, for some reason regular bulb don't last more than a few months at my place and I just got tired of changing them.
The slight delay between flipping the switch and getting light is annoying, but that'* my only complaint. I've found that even though they cost more to buy, it'* actually cheaper than replacing the old type as often as I had been.

then again the beauty of flame is still embraced. some bulbs are shaped to look like flame, fake flame front fireplaces are produced, so on so forth.

a chandelier or glass house fixture just won't look right with a cfl... :(

I use them but I have a few beefs with them.

They are not as bright as regular incand. bulbs.

They don't fit in some of my fixtures because of the large bottom starter part.

They don't work with my dimmers or tri-lights.

They don't work well with heating small spaces for freeze protection in the winter......ya I know they make heat tracing cable.......but the energy is not all lost, it helps heating costs.

I will be searching the black market for them for use in specific applications......HARO

CFL'* can be dimmable, my mom found some for the three mini floods they have over the kitchen peninsula.. They just need to be above 50% dim to "fire" on when you flip the switch, otherwise they don't come on. Sort've like HID'* in my car, they take a bit of juice to create the initial arc, but once they're on, they use less than a std halogen headlight.

In the long run they are cheaper to operate day to day, they last longer, and at this point in time a lot of counties, electric companies, etc are offering rebates if you buy CFLs.

Some have shields so they look just like a regular bulb, I like them, and actually am going to be getting some here for my apt..

Gotta curb the energy bill from the Plasma TV and my Onkyo'* 130w x 7 amplifier...

All I can say is that there better be exceptions to that bill for spotlights, outdoor lights, and decoratives. Fluorescents are useless as outside lights in the winter. If they get cold, it can take them half an hour to come on. Real useful for security lights, eh?

My Brother and I are slowly replacing all the bulbs in our apartment with CFLs, except that I want to put incandescent spots back in the dining room fixture. The CFL in there doesn't have a reflector, so that can throws way less light than it should, and the CFL spots all suck.

I had all CFLs in my apartment at college and they had horrible lifespans! I think i replaced them all at least once in 1.5 years.

I haven't replaced any of my cfl'* in 5 years +. I'm not exactly sure when I put them in but it wasn't too long after we moved in 7 years ago.

Another great energy saver is a HE washing machine. Not only did we see a very noticable drop in the electric bill (thanks to hgh spin speed and shorter drier times) but a nice drop in the water bill too.
