End of the light bulb as we know it?
There are a few places where a std bulb is necessary.
Just think, how are lava lamps going to work with a cool CFL underneath?
With regards to temp, they do take a while in cold yes, but they do last longer in cold. At work we use CFLs in the walk-in fridge and freezer, and they last MUCH longer since they're not prone to failure from tempurature spikes.

hmmm.....yeah, there is definatly places where cfls wont work. also, if you do wanna dim them, you have to get a special dimmer( i think its called an inductive load dimmer) and those are 2-3 times as much as a regular dimmer. at least the one we had at Blowes were.

I had gotten one for free from Yahoo! Answers once (that along with a twine grocery bag), and put it in the lamp next to my recliner. It'* a yellow light one (pretty darn close to my old incandescent ones) and it still took a couple days to get used to. But, I do like it. I'm thinking of replacing all the other ones in my place once I find a color temperature I like.
another thing....any of those bulbs(cfls or tubes) contain mercury. if they are gonna require them, that may become a problem. unless there is a recycling program that people would actually use.....
