if they are missing a limb, i will sometimes give them my change.
if they have two arms, and two legs, all i do tell them to get a job. i dont have much sympathy for them. because in the long run it is them and only them that put, and kept them in the situation they are in.

Sometimes people'* lives crash and burn and often you cant blame them for getting into that kind of mess, BUT your right the only one keeping them there is there own mind. I feel bad about it but money is most definately not going to fix thier problems. I remember my mom made a nice sandwich for a hobo once. When she gave it to him he spat at her and threw it in her face! She isn't so sympathetic anymore.

I don't give money to hobos. For the fact is, if they are asking for money to get food, they just want that money for booze or drugs. Ask them if they want something to eat, if they refuse, walk away. That'* what I do when we are in Cleveland.
Personally, I am not thrilled at walking around and handing hard earned money to lazy asses that won't walk themselves into a grocery store and get a job as a stock boy.

There was a thing about them on the News up here in MN a while ago.....
I guess that some of them were making $50-$60K/year.

I only give to them if certain criteria are met. If there are children in tow (I've seen that a few times), or if they really look like hell. Clean shaven, not all that dirty, decent shoes, and/or a nice sign from a nice black marker on cardboard that'* pretty crisp is a dead giveaway.
Around these parts, the ones that really need it are the ones that don't advertise. Something few people know about me is that I actually WAS a statistic after my divorce and discharge from the service. And though I could have desperately used generosity, I was too proud to accept it.

i never give to panhandlers. i will give rides to people who are trying to get somewhere and i regularly volunteer around here. but dont ask me for money. i work hard for my money, and i dont believe anyone who has a sign like that. id sooner believe the father of lies than one of those people.
i will never give money to panhandlers.
that said, i was at a japanese restaurant about a month ago with my fiancee and two friends. as were going out to the parking lot, a guy comes up to us and asked for a couple of dollars for "something to eat" -- so i said "lets just cut out the middleman" and gave him our leftovers. there was easily enough left to feed four people for a meal. i wish id stayed around long enough to see what he did with it.

I never give them money but I usually give them food. When I'm travelling I take my doggy bag from the restaurant and give it away. They are always very appreciative, even for a half eaten burger.
