who makes a good graphics card for the money?

my roommate is looking to buy a new one, he needs input from people who know more than he and i do. his price range is less than $400

i have a used EVGA Nvidia 6800 GT I am considering selling if he would like to make an offer. Its like 2 yrs old, but still a very competitive card

edit: however, it looks like i wouldnt be able to get what it is worth to me for it....

He can get by on much less than $400 then. Depending, of course, on what you mean by "minor gaming". NVidia is good, as is ATI. Since they make the chips that go on just about every brand out there, start with their sites...
