As far as the margority is concerned theres only one kind of avalanche, the gutless 1/2ton kind. Not to many are expecting the 8.1L(345hp/455torque), and a company makes a Whipple puffer for it The 455lbs of torque Doesnt let me do burnouts, but man can I grab traction, and easly tow 12,000lbs.

Whipple supercharger adds close to 135 horsepower and 150+ ft/lb torque! The intercooler will add another 30hp and 40 ft-lb torque to the 8.1L.

Dont get me wrong, with some mods burnouts can happen.... Whipple /intercooler/ exhaust/ chip/ pcm reburn

I dont like to talk about my newly founded friend on non-truck boards, but you made the TOPIC.
Love the burn out...

I wish you could order the Duramax in the Avalanche...that would be nice. I have three kids, a 10000 lb boat and always too much stuff to haul. Right now we have the Bonne, and my wife'* little car goes back in August. She is going to get the Bonne (have to keep it in the family) and i need to get something that will haul the boat. I need to dirive the 8L, but I am also going to drive the 3/4 ton with the Duramax. I have drive the Toyota and it is nice (and less expensive). Havent tried the new Nissan yet...those are getting great write ups!

Maybe a 3/4ton avalanche is just what you need. Get 4.10 rear gears like me, and you can tow 12,000lbs. It depends on how much your going to use it, because like the old 454, the 496 gets the 'same' MPG loaded or empty. That means 11-12MPG I dont know maybe you cant handle that. Both of my duramaxes got a little less then 30mpg(not to mension Diesel is FREE at most of my job sites) My new not so loaded up one is only the extended cab, and not the crew cab like my last one.

I've been away for a couple of weeks on business - hence the late reply....

I have to go on the GM site and see what the different trucks can haul. I think you can get the suburban with the duramax...but I bet it wont have the hauling weight of your truck.

How is the space for three kidletts in the back of the extended cab?

No duramax in avalanche or tahoe, or suburban!...
The extended cab is ok for kids pre-14 probably... I removed the seat in my work truck so I can put my gear back there...
