I suppose you could dress the owl turd any way you like...maybe rest it on a bed of lettuce leaves, top it with sprigs of parsley - you're not going to eat those things. I've never seen a log sit on display long enough to worry about making it purdy.

And I should post an addendum to the strict adherance to the recipe, and that is:
"Don't deviate from the plan until you've built and tested a couple cheese logs." Experimentation is how things become better (or worse), but you need a baseline first. Try it a couple times as given, then try to improve it.
