I think its a nice car and if its not suiting his needs anymore, then selling private party is the way to go. Dealer basically insulted with the offer.
10 years from now he might regret parting with it though, sure wish I still had the 71 GTO I had in my senior year of HS.

I wish I could buy it from him. I'd repaint the bad sections myself. It technically belongs to my parents. My brother is paying them for it. He owes them about $2,000 for it. Maybe I could get it from them for $100 a month.
I don't agree with the 3.1 V6 either. 135 laughable horsepower.
I told him to buy my 94. He said he doesn't want to have repairs. I reminded him I've practically repaired everything already.

My roomate from the last two years has a 91 Firebird with T-Tops, and the 3.1/A4. It'* got an aftermarket muffler, qas quieter than my bonne, but a good note. Was great to cruise in, but that'* about it..
It'* really not worth more than 1500 if it'* got bad paint.. If it was a 350 with a special package, it *might* be worth something down the line.

It would be hard for me to part with a car that rare. Aside from the paint it appears to be in great shape. It might be something to keep around as a project car or something.
An LS1 swap, though awesome, would be expensive as stated earlier. But an LT1 or an older 350 would be readily available and much cheaper.
Seems like a car that has a lot of sentimental value, so I dont know that I could get rid of it so easily.

And as you said, that thing should get much better gas mileage. My Cutlass I got rid of this spring had the 3.1 and got the same kind of gas mileage as the Bonneville.

two things.
wnyfbody.com might be a good place to list it.
And I have a line on a TGP with the Turbo 3.1. I think you see where I'm going with this...
I'd probably try ebay with the car or craigslist (free). Those two places are best for rare stuff usually.
