can I insure a vehicle I don't own? update: nope!
 

As of right now, I have full coverage on my Bonneville, and liability on my old lumina, through Progressive. My term ends the end of this month and it automatically renews. It is cheaper for me to insure both cars, instead of just my Bonneville because of the multicar discount. I sold the lumina weeks ago, but I have not told Progressive about it. Is it illegal for me to insure a vehicle not registered to me? The price difference between the two is signifigant, thats why I am wondering.

I think its fine. Its not like you're going to have an accident with it...nor will you be driving it at all, for all progressive knows, you still own it, but even if they found out, hey. maybe its your friend's car your driving. there is nothing that i know of that says you can't insure a car you don't own. but to be sure, i would call progressive and ask anonymously.

Dont think it will be a problem. I have a rich uncle that buys and sells cars all the time and always forgets to take them off his policy. He game me his 92 towncar at least 5 years ago and He only now had it removed from his insurance. To the insurance co money is money lol

This is sort of similar...once I knew I was buying the Bonne, I called my insurance agent and told her that it wasn't mine yet but I was going to buy it in the next week and I had it insured no problems...it was another 3 days before the car was "legally" mine, when all the paperwork was signed and stuff. IMO, I don't see how it would be a big deal, really. I do agree with WJ though, call anonymously and ask! What they don't know won't hurt them!

At least in Canada you can't. If there was a loss, they would have to pay you (for something you don't even own). The premium is also generally based upon the record of the primary driver. It is really no different than you taking out a life insurance policy on someone else. Although this is "seen in the movies" all the time, it doesn't happen in real life (parents taking out life insurance policies for their own children of course is different). As the insurance agent told me, you can't insure something you don't own.

It's been my experience that it's up to the Insurance company and state laws. Some will...some won't. In NYS, anyone can register a vehicle and have insurance on it, regardless of who is the owner (owner must sign the registration application and you need a copy of their drivers license). But my insurance company (Amica) will NOT insure a vehicle unless the person's name is on the title. ;)
