Default Anybody here run Linux as there OS?

I was wondering what you thought. Pro'* versus Con'*

I learned that if you run Linux on a HP laptop you can have better fan control.
My HP Nc8230 runs very warn and I wanted to download a similar program I installed in my Dell D810 that lets you run your fans a WOT all the time.

Thanks to Venom for that one.

Oh yeah John I sold my D610 and bought a D810..wow this thing rocks. Duel fans and runs at a cool 86 to 97 all the time!

Thanks in advance,

Todd

I helped a kid down the road build a computer cobbled with an old chassis and parts from newegg.co. We put in ubuntu, but neither of us cared for it. Could have been chiefly because each of us know every little cubby whole of windows control panel. It'* just to different from what I am confortable with. Squela loves and swears by it. You can partiton your hard drive and just try it if you are really interested.

The fan control program was made by an idividual with an interest in Insprirons. I have never found anything like it for other brands. HP huh?.............

google "Speed Fan"... nice little program... prolly what you want, IF it will work on your unit... ive seen it not work on some...

Ive used linux on some computers... built one just to tinker with it... I prefer Kubuntu over the rest but Red Hat isnt too bad... its all in what you want... other than windows i prefer a mac os to be honest but its all in preference... they all have pros and cons and i can list several for all

if your interested... go to Kubuntu.com... i believe thats right... you can order most of the cds for free from them... they get enough business they send them out for nothing.... not even shipping... but it takes a couple weeks to get them

Ya, big IF there. It has ok reviews on Download.com. One comment spoke off it sending up red flags all through installation but it did go in and work. I got the same warnings but went ahead. It didnt work on my Inspiron and caused serious problems. It'* a DOS program and banged hard against my OS and what I'm running. It may have been because I already had a resident program utilizing the fan/temp sensors? Whatever the reason, it had my memory flamingly taxed. Several reboots and waiting for long drawn out virus scan didnt help. Also the program did not register in my add/remove programs folder. I ended up getting rid of it and the memory problem with a system restore. I'd stay clear of that one.

HAHA...sorry but wow... never seen that much of a problem arise with it... i just meant that in my laptop it works, my gaming tower it works, my friends laptop wont recognize that it has ANY fans... hehe theres just nothing there

but ive never seen it cause problems, it was prolly a bad download and the virus scan, and the other fan tool, and everything else running together that caused the problem but i dunno computer problems never suprise me... just make me

During the installation, the MS DOS window came up, did a couple installation lines and it all froze, random little hyphens blinking on random lines within the little DOS box. Waited a spell, nothing happened, so I forced shutdown and restart with Task Manager, ..... and that'* when the fight started. LOL
