Well coming from a nursing student i would say anything in the medical field is a good choice. You are garantueed a job and the pay is usually well. But the work is where you have to question yourself. Even just being a registered nurse is hard enough. For the last 2 years i have had NO life, all nursing all the time. I am actually taking a year off to clear my mind and get ready to go back (not my choice, but i will notget into that). The medical field is a very hard field and takes alot of work and determination. And for pay i know a few personally and they do not make anywhere close to 400K a year. Well not around here. Nurses are paid almost he highest starting pay in the USA in this area and we are around 27-28 (around 50-60K a year) an hour to start. Every anesthesiologist i know makes around 90-100K a year. Most surgeouns only make around 350-400K a year and they are top paid.

So in closing, ask your self if you can defote the next say 9 years of your life for it. Do as much research as you can on it and talk to people about it. I am sure if you go to your local hospital the anesthesiologists there would be more then willing to talk to you in depth about it.

And an edit on my last post about the 400K a year. I am in no way saying it isnt true but i am saying i highly doubt you will start at even 1/3 of that. Maybe after say 10 years in the field you may be to around that area but not until you have been there for a while.

Personally, I find this very hard to believe. What you are suggesting is that an anesthesiologist (a fully licensed physician) only makes 20-30K anually more than a paramedic? I think not.

a paramedic?? A paramedic only makes like 10-12 dollars an hour thats what like 20K a year.

I know what they make in my area and i just told you a anesthesiologist makes around 100K a year

A registered nurse makes around 60K a year (and i am hoping your paramedic comment wasnt towards a RN)

A family physcian or like internal medicine dr makes around 125-150K (maybe a hair more) a year

A surgeuon is at the top of the list making around say 300-400K a year

Okay, then somebody made a big mistake on my paycheque. I'm making roughly $65K/year before stat pay and weekend shift differential. I'm also quite a way from the top of our pay grid. I do know that RN'* here make even more than paramedics.

This seems much more reasonable. After all, this is a specialty once a person is already a physician.

I called the hosptial (CVPH) and asked just because you guys got me wondering. Starting pay is around $124,000 a year. But i was told after experience in the field it goes up very "quickly". But my figures were a little low. Sorry about that.

As for the paramedic comment, are you a paramedic? and you are making over 60K a year?? Because i have several freinds who are paramedics and are in the nursing program now and i know for a fact they make 10-12 dollars an hour. Even for a private company it is still 12 dollars an hour.
