It can't be water wave breaking thru... Last time I took high school geography Antartica was still a frozen landmass, not an icemass like the North pole.

I wonder if it is possible that pressure was keeping the water liquid, and when it broke free of the crust, the decompression allowed it to flash freeze? I've done that with a beer bottle in the freezer.

Agreed. I guess it would be possible for some water to seep through, making hundreds of different layers of ice, which would explain the lines that are seen in the ice. But I highly doubt that temperatures seen even in Antarctica are cold enough to flash freeze tons upon tons upon TONS of water.
