I feel your pain man with the 3.1, gettin on the highway was scary sometimes with my 96 cutlass. When the 3.4 came out it was bascially one of a kind, unfortuately it was ahead of the technology; like timing chains and balanced camshafts. But i agree a properly maintained Twin DOHC can be just as reliable as the Pushrod 60 degree V6'*.gee I was hoping I was the only one searching for an LQ1/5 speed combo

I'm so tired of misinformed people bashing the 3.4. It is NOT a bad engine if it'* kept up. Same goes FOR ANY OTHER ENGINE. It'* not any less reliable than any 3800 on this board. Oh god.. you have to change the timing belt every 60,000 miles?! I just can't handle that!..

I picked up our 2001 GP SE for $4,000. It was in her price range and she likes the look inside and out. And she'* not a race car driver. She just got sick of driving the son-in-laws project POS camero, or his pickup. she couldn't reach the pedals very well. Plus the gas mileage was horrible on both. I think she'll live with poor power rating.

I do agree tho, that if the engine was taken care of it was a good reliable engine...
as for the GP with the 3100, Its not that underpowered, 3100 Vin J 170 Hp(99 & later ) and 190-195 Ft Lbs is ok for what its intended for.... I would have rather had the 3800 in it, But the 3100 will have a good long life... I have had friends that drove the 3100 GP'* 97 and later and liked them... Can't knock em...
I have driven a few 3400'* in the cars and vans and have been pretty impressed with them for being a 3400 V6... 180 Hp and 210 ft lbs is not bad
And some of the N body 3400 V6'* having ratings of 21cty and 32hwy is not bad either...
