Welcome to the GMForum.

www.compnine gives exhaustive VIN breakdowns but not that far back.

Here'* one that covers 74 even if it'* a bit limited.

For $50 (of course) GM will give you it all for the car.

It sucks, Chrysler does this for free if you tell them about yourself and the vehicle. It helped me rebuild alot of things with my 94 Ram.

I didn't see it during the test drive or any other time I drove it during the day but tonight I went to go grab some taco bell and the GEN light was on. the light gets dimmer the higher the RPM of the engine so I'm thinking voltage regulator. I'll take it down and get the battery and system tested in the morning. should be an easy cheap fix whatever it is.

welcome, alot of the older alt setups the sense goes through the dash and the connections get bad and alt doesnt charge very well. if its not something physically bad

they have a pigtail that bypasses all that, and you get a modern volt gauge and put it in your car

might get the pigtail and a gauge but then again I only bought it to get me through the next few months so if the system checks out I'll probably just leave it alone

well I took Brock down to les schwab'* and the battery tested good and he said it looked like the system was charging. the light only comes on about every other time I fire up the car and it hasn't had a sluggish start yet so it'* probably just the sensor/connections.

one time I bought an '85 caprice for $350 and traded it to a friend who drove it for a year or two without any trouble. but my best score was my '74 ranchero I paid $1300 for and I've had for 11 years and the only major repair was replacing the timing chain. even after taking an F250 in the back it'* still driveable.
