Default Intermittent Power Windows Failure on 2004 Tahoe

On my 2004 Tahoe sometimes all the windows are dead. It is intermittent. It started about 4 months ago with the occasional fail, but now it is almost all the time or more often than not. When it happens it is all the windows, not just one. Any idea where to look, what it could be? Thanks.

Assuming this is just with the driver-door switches. Have you tried the other door switches while this is happening?

Check the wires in the loom between the door and the pillar.

Good question. Why didn't I try that? It looks like the individual switches work just fine. It'* the main control cluster on the drivers side that doesn't do anything while the individual switches do operate each respective window.

I agree with carfixer007 ^^^^^^^

. . . but if you are not able to test, and you are able to replace the switch assembly, I'd just go ahead and do that. It'* 20 years old and probably very well used, so it'* going to be due soon anyways.

If that doesn't fix it, then likely it is wiring in the door or in the boot between the door and body.

Thanks. I will replace the switch cluster first. If that doesn't fix it, I will check the wiring harness between the door and body. I hope the cluster is the problem, because it is a lot less work. I will report back. Does the Tahoe have a history of broken wires in the harness between door and body, just wondering!

All makes and models. The door opening and closing stresses them.

Yeah, many do. I'll say from my perspective I didn't hardly ever hear of broken wiring in doors until the last 20ish years ago. Maybe that'* because "back in the good ol' days, they used guuud wire made in `merica", or maybe that'* because people opened and closed doors less in the olden days, or maybe the cars are lasting a lot more miles thereby having doors opened and closed more. Personally, I'd put my money on all three of those combined with the "cheapening campaign" that'* been underway at GM since the late 1990'*.

That having been said, I've seen many times the control clusters go out than broken wires in the door. The driver'* switch cluster gets used all the time, gets the most vibration (from door slams), gets the most weather, gets the most spills, and gets the most dust and crud.

A quick test that might tell us something: Does the passenger-window disable switch have any effect on the other three windows?
