Is that the shaft that holds the middle gears in place in the front differential?

the shaft that goes into this hole is the cv shaft. It looked new so I think someone nicked that bearing when they put it in.
I think the bearing is number 41 on this list. not sure.

If I'm lucky it will be bearing #42. It'* $10. bearing #41 is $100.

I think your other arrow is pointing at the inner side of 40, and the outer side of 40 goes into the inner side of 39. I believe what you are seeing doesn't face a bearing.

I believe 40 to be the outer race for 39.

yeah I think you're right. Little confusing for me. I think I can get a better look at it when I take the diff. out.
I've watched videos of this on YouTube and I am still a bit unsure.
BTW the gear lube I drained was kinda black. even though I changed it only months ago. very minor sparkles in it. no shavings that I could see.
