2020 Surburban Tranmisson Issues
Before I begin, I am not doing a smear campaign. However, I am very interested in the truth. My wife has a 2020 Surburban 5.3 which she purchased from Rod Hatfield new. This vehicle has 120,000 miles serviced regularly etc. This is one of many vehicles she has purchased from Rod Hatfield. So, about a week ago she noticed that the vehicle had a shutter, no check engine lights were on, however. As we were coming home the vehicle the rear wheel seems to lock up. The vehicle shifts itself into neutral. Turn the key off it resets and drives good for a few then it does it again. Now I ran the codes, and it showed a control valve shut off. I had it towed to Rod Hatfield to have it looked at, mainly because i found that the NHTSA had issued a recall notice for this year model which in turn GM recalled 461,839 diesel vehicles as per USA Today reports. Our vehicle although it is gas has the exact same symptoms. I was told by the service manager that it needs a new transmission at the tune of 12,000 dollars. They have no recalls on the vehicle and the warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. My wife a nurse now is vehicle less a courtesy vehicle was offered at 44.00 dollars a day. Did i say that my wife has brought a lot of vehicles from Rod Hatfield, all new? So, in conclusion I will research and contact NHTSA and GM to address this issue. The service staff was friendly and that a plus. GM forums have a lot of customers complaining with the same issues. So, if a rep from GM would like to talk to me, my number is xxx-xxx-xxxx let'* work together to find a solution. Dxx Cxxxxxx, Dxxxxs Chevy my wife a lifelong chevy girl may be looking for a new dealership just saying

Cool! We don't care to start smear campaigns here.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Sorry, I've always wanted to say that here.
I'll see what we can do about that below . . .
Rod Hatfield Chevrolet in Kexington, KY ?
5.3 means 6-speed automatic on this one, right?
2024 - 2020 = 4
120,000 / 4 = 30,000 per year
30,000 per year = WOW!
. . . but doesn't matter relative to the life of the transmission if it was serviced regularly and not abused.
Both rear wheels seemed to lock up or just one?
Like skidding along the ground like in action-adventure shows?
How fast was the vehicle going at the time?
How much accelleration or braking was it doing at the time?
What was/were all codes?
Could you post this information for us?
Fair warning: Even with exact same symptoms, if it isn't covered by the recall, it isn't covered by the recall. On one side, GM, and just about all manufacturers, work hard to minimize the impact of recalls on their shareholders. If more 5.3 gassers with your color paint and choice of rims have the issue, they'd be forced to react to that as well, but that appears to not have happened yet. On the other side, it could be a completely different phenomenon causing the same exact symptoms on your vehicle, but not be related to the cause of the diesel version'* recall.
A little advice: I have found that diagnostic skills at dealerships in general have gone downhill quite a bit over the last couple of decades. Not saying all technicians at all dealerships can't diagnose yada yada, but rather saying that whatever factors cause the result that I see. I believe one of those factors to be systemic: Look up the symptom, swap the part. That'* often the way.
Regarding the $12,000.00, remember, they're saying this: "We think it needs an entirely new transmission and it costs $12,000.00 to do this here at Rod Hatfield Chevrolet. You are not forced to stay with them.
What did they find wrong that makes them say this? Surely they have gone through diagnostic steps to support this diagnosis and can present a summary of this to you. The alternative is that they just don't know and believe that swapping the whole thing will likely fix it.
I'm not convinced so far. Sounds like an electrical issue to me.
The joys of owning a non-warranty car!
I'd go rent from Enterprise or something, and I wouldn't rent from Hertz ever.
That'* cool, but I wouldn't expect that loyalty to cause Rod Hatfield Chevrolet to eat a $12,000.00 repair when they likely had a perfectly good extended vehicle warranty for sale somewhere along the way.
Good idea. I haven't heard of a lot of these. If you could post some links, I'm interested! Not just for your case, but also for my future supporting these vehicles here as they age.
Just to be thorough: GMForum.com is not directly affiliated with General Motors in any way. This is a forum that was created originally to support Pontiacs that eventually evolved into supporting all GM with advice etc.
I have obfuscated your personal information because if I leave it, it will be available to 7,000,000,000+ people plus 385,000+ more per day all over the world until the end of time, and that'* probably not good.

What trans is in your Suburban and what DTC'*. Are you referring to TSB 21-na-275 that refers to wheel lock up? If so, that document is a Technical Service Bulletin and not a "Recall". it refers to an internal valve body issue in a 10 speed trans. The 2020 Suburban used a MYC 6 speed, M5U 8 speed or a MF6 10 speed. The Document , for a Suburban, is for an MQC 10 speed is used in the 2021 Suburban. With that being said, Depending on what trans you have the makes a difference. In the 8 and 10 speeds I have had a lot of valve body issues, not to say that'* your issue. What you can do is at your dealer, is request customer assistance. The dealer can run the repair through a calculator program and see IF GM will assist in the repair. Just a suggestion. Don't go to the dealer and demand, Not saying you did, That will get you nowhere. 12K sounds pricy, You can ask if there is something that they can do on the cost of the repair for a loyal customer. A percentage of something is better than holding to 100% and get nothing when they lose the job. I hope this is helpful.
