2009 silverado ltz 2500 diesel
dtcassist, I was wondering if bouncing around on the road and fuel level dropping that it at least it might show some signs of life. I really have no choice I need to get some fuel out of it so running around is a must I will definitely keep a close eye on it for any signs
This is a common design flaw. More than likely designed like this on purpose. Lowest bidder/shortest life span.
In the auto repair industry, we see this as a pre-indicator that the pump is on the way out and start advising customers to plan on changing the pump now, not later when they are stranded in a parking lot 8pm at night when its 10*F.
Unfortunately, in the gasoline world, are worn out fuel level sensor will cause the engine ECU not to do the EVAP emission test. It only does this test when the fuel level gets to a certain point/blah blah blah. If its constantly empty, it can't run the test.

Mike, quick question I was looking around underneath my truck to see what I might need to do to drop tank and found 2 wires chewed or cut in half one purple one and the other looks like tan with a stripe on it when i feel up in there on top of tank it goes to a plug thinking that might be my sensor but i cant seem to pull plug off can't see anything up there its all by feel not enough access to look is there a lock on this plug that you might know of would like to see what happened to these wires they were in a spiral harness but that has been chewed up or melted because its opened up cant really tell until i pull it out but can't get the plug off any help with this .....Thanks
Hey Mike, I guess the way I wrote it up was confusing I have never removed this connector before and after searching the internet I found that it has a locking clip that needed to be removed first.Like I was saying I couldn't see up in there it was all by feel. I definitely would have liked to drop the tank but I had just filled it with fuel before this issue started so it still has 26 gals in it and lifting the bed would not be much fun either with the high rise fiberglass cap on there. So I was just looking to see what it would take to remove the tank when the time came, when I found the wires chewed in half its all back together and working like it should what a relief for sure . Thanks for all the help with this .....
