The milage is stored in the cluster itself. Mine went out and the dealer tried to pull the milage with some kind of program they had. Mine was to fried to pull any info so I found one on ebay that would fit my silverado. The dealer wanted over $500 for a new one and I paid $130.00 for a used one with 34000 miles on it. It now has 45000 on it. I had close to 88000 on my truck when it went out.

In New York Dealers can not sell a car with out telling you the odometer is wrong. And the auctions dealers buy used cars from have to anounce that before it is auctioned. It is a crime to not dispence this information in New York. It is Odometer fraud. It is also on the vehicles title. Even though new york dosent put milegage on titles of vehicles over 10 years old. You still have to mark the paper work that the mileage is incorrect even for the older ones.
