2003 Silverado Brake Booster Service Message
What manual?....the owners manual doesn't have things like that, if it still has that after all these years, and this is not my vehicle, is there another place?......................
Look at the top of that post and you'll see 'Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone. See the links. The entire service manual is there.
- When the vehicle is keyed ON, the SBA performs a self test by toggling the Supplemental Brake Assist Signal Circuit low for one second. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) recognizes this as an indication that the SBA is functional. If the IPC does not see this signal for five consecutive ignition cycles the Service Brake Booster Message is displayed. The SBA performs diagnostics at 16 Km/h (10 mph) under normal conditions, and before 16 Km/h (10 mph) if a low vacuum condition exists. The SBA then spins the motor and runs diagnostics to determine if the pump is operating and the SBA is functional. The SERVICE BRAKE BOOSTER message will display until the next ignition cycle if the unit is unable to maintain reduced power brake levels.
In the meantime, if you're not towing or carrying lots of weight, and if the brakes feel fine, you're probably fine. This is supplemental to brake boost vacuum that is already generated in copious amounts by the engine for the rare cases where it might get low in perfect-storm circumstances.
It appears the self test is complete when the Key is turned on.... is there another test that can be performed...We've keyed on the ignition numerous times as the instructions here indicate....... I am thinking it is a faulty vacuum assist booster.
So . . . you hear the pump motor run when you turn the ignition on?
