So I posted a thread a while ago and found out what was wrong with my suv on why it wouldn’t start. After fixing the issue, I found another problem. When running at idle, it would run very rough, and upon stepping on the gas at all, it would only rise to about 2500 rpm and stop there. It would not raise any higher even if I was in gear. So I removed the catalytic converter from the equation and cranked it without it on and it did the same exact thing. I’m not sure if it is in some sort of limp mode or if the throttle body is damaged somehow. To my knowledge, the throttle body is electronic and prior to finding this problem, when I was trying to get it running, I had a friend spray some starter fluid in while trying to boost it off. Could that have potentially damaged the throttle body? I’m just trying to see what kind of money I’m gonna have to spend.

If it is DBW, get it scanned for codes.

I always tell folks to never use ether. You want to use something with less kick in it like carb+choke cleaner. I've seen plastic intake manifolds blow clean apart into hundreds of pieces because of ether.

well I had already scanned it before taking the cat off. The only thing I could find in there that would catch my immediate attention was this….

If it needs to relearn the crank sensor, that might do it.

Is there certain scanner I need for that process? If so, which one would be recommended?

There are quite a few on the market. You just need to verify that the unit can do 'crank relearn'. Expect to pay $$$ for this unit.
If you think you found one, post it here first, one of us will let you know if its worth it/or correct.

I'm going to lean on the safe side and say no. Accoring to the description...

Crank Relearn I believe falls in the bi-directional control area. Most home garage scanners do not have bi-directional control.

I had to spend a few minutes researching this,, ,but I found the Innova 5610 is bi-directional. I even looked in the manual and it tells you how to do a crank relearn with this model.

If you really want to have a warm and fuzzy feeling, order a GM Tech2. They cost about $2000 and are designed for GM vehicles.
