winter tires and wheels for 05 GXP

I want to install winter tires on my 05 GXP. It is equipped with 18" allow wheels. Will 16" or 17" steel wheels clear the front discs and callipers? Any suggestions on tires and sizes?

How big is the spare. That will probably tell you how small you can go.
