I can't believe that the engine never got another hp boost, when the 2k car came out. I guess thats why the sales declined in the Bonneville. Nothing was refined. Nothing new to the table.

I wish they would have done a revision and changed the cam keeping it a push rod but allowing it to now have a more variation by useing a "three-dimensional profile" cam to see about this visit http://auto.howstuffworks.com/camshaft6.htm . This would allow a larger power band and beable to increase MPG by having better durrations for given RPMs

The 35 HP came from the totall redesign of the 3800... The series II had a lighter Crank, almost 1 inch less deck heigth, whic gives you less Moving mass, Better intake runners, symmetric porting, larger valves, and larger throttle body... Everything adds up...

If you noticed, for a long time the 3100 and 3400 recieved no real changes for some time... The 3100 came out in 94, and the Series II L36 came out in 95... The 3100 J was new for 99, the 3800 had a few changes which made the engine even quieter and smoother... But why redesign an engine when you are going to kill it off in a matter of time?

Years Back GM had talked about killing off the 60* or the 90* line of V6'* as they said that they did not need both engines...

GM will be keeping the 60* V6... we should have know that when GM started talking about the 3500 and the larger 3900... While the Basic design of the 3800 has remained unchanged regaurdless of that fact that that the Series III is the same thing as the series II with the addition of Fly By Wire...

The 3800 will be around for a couple more years.... After that it will be the 60* Chevy V6, no More Buick V6
