Default wheel bearing vs half shaft

2002 Old Silhouette. Grinding noise started a week ago. Gradually worse. Can make it go away briefly if slightly punch accelerator. Grinds and clicks. Not neccessarily when turning. Not a "hum." Definitely pertains to rotation. No play when pulling tire at 12 and 6 or 9 and 3.
Half shaft boots look good. Can somewhat repeat noise while on jack stand at about 20 miles an hour but not as pronounced. Just replaced passenger side half shaft but, it had typical clicking when turning. Any Ideas? Want to make sure I replace correct part.

Thanks,

Joe

After close inspection noticed grease squeezing out from inner boot side closest to transmission. Boot still intact, grease coming out end of boot near boot clamp.

Grease exiting the boot is a sign that the half shaft has issues, from a leaking boot to a bigger problem. Seeing grease often means time to replace.

With that said, the hub is a much higher failure item. To stop the noise, the hub is what I would replace.

I just did my driver side CV Axle, same issue grease was leaking out the inboard boot at the big end of the boot. Don't know about yours, but on W Body cars the drivers side is a pain because of the sub frame, no where to pry from, then again your not going to need the Axle to work again, maybe rebuild later.

Bad bearings will typically make more noise when turning due to the additional stress. A bad driver side bearing makes more noise when turning right, passenger side when turning left. If the noise is no different when turning compared to going straight, I would suspect the half shaft.
