Just wondering

it is kinda like a blanket for your engine. helps it warm up faster on cold mornings by keeping more heat in the engine bay. It also is fire retardant, just in case the engine decides to go up in flames.

it keeps the heat off the paint on the hood.

it also helps to keep things quieter

Weird, I was looking at cars with opened hoods and some have it and some dont

the better cars (aka bonnevilles) have it.

And even better cars (Bonneville SSE and SSEi) have the names printed RIGHT on them!!

I've had mine off for over a year and it didn't mess up my paint yet. Maybe it happens over time though.

I've left mine on as well however due to heat retention properties I raise the hood at the track until I run.

Mine too has been removed. I removed it two weeks ago while working.. just because it is falling apart, and getting it'* **** all over my [now] clean engine bay. I had talked to my dad about this on previous occasions, and he said that it doesn't do much as far as heat retension, but that is what it is used for, along with keeping the noise down [again, not sure how much noise that little pad can block, but whatever floats GM'* boat].
