What is it with our trannies???
My old 94 Bonneville that my hubby drives has got 265,000 kilometres on it and never had a problem with the tranny. In the 8 years we've owned it the biggest problem has been wheel bearings and alternators.

My car has gone through a total of three trannies so far. Stock, previous owner rebuild, then with me. Hopefully third time is a charm. The car has 147k miles on it. Then again, my fathers 93 F-150 with 191k miles has the same tranny, and he beats the crap out of it. I think its just a draw of luck when buying a used vehicle though.
300,000km and my car'* shifting uber smoothly, no signs of trouble what so ever *knock on wood*
Any car can have tranny issues. The Toyotas I grew up around generally outlast any domestic tranny, and the manuals can do 350-450 whp no problem.

okay so on my way to school i was bored. i was on an empty open road to i was like eh wtf. so i floored the car to the top of 1st and slammed it in reverse to see what it would do. well low and behold the A340E lived. i love this transmission. it peeled rubber badass too. i did however bend my muffler cuz i wanted to see what it would do in reverse slammed in drive. well needless to say it screeched the tires a little bit and slammed the **** out of the back end of the car with the street. lol but the car acts like nothing happened to it. i love this car. i'm gonna keep it forever.

EDIT: Although, the trannies and transfer cases in the 4-Runner are tough as nails. :P

1989 Mercury Grand Marquis 235,000 miles
1. Fluid has NEVER been changed sice 44K miles
2. 1999- Mom forgets what side of the colum the windsheild wipers are on, throws into reverse @ 35mph. Wheels lock, engine locks, simply start her up and leave.
3. 2001- Peice of carpet falls on throttle, and goes WOT towards traffic, throw into park @ 45mph WOT loud grinding to stop. Pick carpet of gas peddle put in drive and take off.
Now the car is rusting apart but the tranny is almost perfect. However, after #3 its a little reluctant to downshift. Hmmmmm.. I wonder why?!

To look at the flip side of this argument, I had a 91 Lumina (3.1, 4T60) that went 194K on the original transmission, and I beat the hell out of that car after my parents gave it to me at 143K. In fact, the only reason that transmission burned up is because I used it to tow my dad'* fullsize Chevy truck out of a steep ditch and had to yank and tug to get it to pop out of the ditch...which did leave a badass burnout where I was spinning my tires for two minutes...
However, I'm on the third transmission in my Bonneville since I bought it in October. And I have no idea how many transmissions were in it before that.
It'* been suggested that one reason the 3800 transmissions burn up so fast is because the shift point for overdrive is too low, and the fluid pump doesn't turn fast enough at 45-50 mph. Any thoughts?
