Do you guys really understand where all of this came from?
A lot of this came from the days before electronicly controled transmissions...
Most of the GM hydraulic 4 speed OD transmissions weather they are the 4T60 or 4L60( 700 R4 ) Had a lot of gear hunting issues... and at certain speeds these transmissions could hunt a lot between 3rd and 4th gears... This was hard on the trans and there for it was reccomemded that these cars and trucks maintain 3rd( D) blow 45mph as to avoid gear hunting...
Things got a lot better with the later 4T60'* and even better yet with the 4T60-E... with the newer transmissions gear hunting is not a real issue... The TCC could get a bit of a workout, if you are driving and the TCC is coming in and out too much for your liking you could then go to 3rd gear( D in 96 and earlier models )...

I always drive it in OD.
My friend told me that flooring it in Drive will make it go a little faster than flooring it in OD. I told him it didn't, but I told him putting it in performance ride gives it 25 extra HP.

I always leave it in D.
I only use 3, 2 or 1 to decelerate.
Except when drag racing, I do my burnouts in 2.
Also to obtain maximum acceleration start out in D then after the 1-2 shift, drop it back down to 2, so it will wind up to the 6200 rev limiter at 103 mph.(stock ratios assumed).
For the 2000+ cars leaving it in D is the best because it will shift at 6000 rpm in 1st. If you select another gear like 3, 2 or 1, it will shift at 5500 rpm. This is probably only specific to the INTENSE PCM reburn. :?
