well I think it is very much a luck of the draw thing. bought my car with 62000 and two days later the coolant light came on, the plastic intake manifold had started to leak. I got that fixed and a few weeks later the brakes trashed out on me and then ate the rotors on the front, so I got all new brakes. a few months later I am on the highway and the belt tensioner pulley bushing went and I lost the belt so had to get that replaced. one year later, almost to the day, I was getting off the highway and I heard a knocking. looked down and I had 0 oil pressure. turns out I threw a rod bearing and then the rod cracked the block. now I am breaking in a whole new engine on the car. I changed the oil and filters every 3000 miles or earlier, and don't really beat on it.....I have my camaro for that. if I didn't like this car so much I would have ditched it a while back, but it is a very enjoyable daily driver.

Holy Crap! Looks like Bonnevilles are notorious for throwing a rod bearing and cracking the block. Best be careful then, yeah, you're right, it'* luck of the draw.

They're rare? That makes me feel much better, thanks Pat. I better take care of my baby so she doesn't scatter her motor all over the highway.

93 SLE is right on. These motors are strong. Just make sure you keep
and eye out for any oil contamination from a failed UIM. Rods through
blocks are NOT common on 3800'*.
As with any other motor, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

If anyone ever has a chance to look at a few Bottom ends....
Look at the 3.0 Buick V6 HO 85-87, 86-88 3.8 HO and any 3800, then take a look at a few others like a ford 3.0 60* or 4.0 60* among a few other makers.... And you'll see the diffrence
