Well here is a Thread I never wanted to Post. now with a vid

Going for a drive up to Barrie (40mins-hour out of Toronto) to buy some Ski-doo parts for the sled. And about 15-20min into the drive I hear a VERY loud screeching sound, then the car dies, and will not restart in neutral. So I coast to the left curb lane and pop the hood only to see smoke coming from the belt side of the motor. So we look things over and can’t see any problems. Turn the motor over while watching the pulleys and all spun just fine, so no seized ones. So we get it towed back to the shop (bargained the guy to $150 [40km tow]). We got it in the shop and get it started (does now that its cold) KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK..... im told to shut it down. Turns out I f*cked a connecting rod and killed a baring (screeching sound) .

So it looks like I will be taking the car off the road a lot sooner then original planned (was going to take it off the road for winter mods and body work)
now its motor replacement  / mods/ body work

f*ck im so bummed out right now :(

Yeah, make it better, faster, stronger.... turn it into the bionic bonne  Just don't spend 6 million on it though.

PEARL_JAM 11-19-2006 02:04 AM

Sorry to hear the bad news. :holypoop: How many miles does the motor have?

JimmyFloyd 11-19-2006 02:40 AM

Dang man. That sucks. Does this mean my visit is going to be put on hold? You going with a new motor or a good used one? Let us know how ut goes.

His was already rebuilt in 99, so we don't know. The DIC says 305,000 kms (189,000 miles).

brianj 11-19-2006 12:08 PM

Sorry to hear Pete, but greener pastures are ahead! At least now you won't be bored over the winter with no car to "play" with! ;)

Maymybonnieliveforevr 11-19-2006 12:13 PM

I'm also sorry to hear Peter, you can ignore a previous post asking what's wrong with your motor now. If there's anything I can do to help let me know.

hate when they dont torque the connecting rods correctly when they rebuild.

same thing happened to me at 30,000 miles after a GM goodwrench drop in (454/7.4l) in my old truck.

at least its not the trans that went out, the motor should be MUCH easier to drop in.

bonnie94ssei 11-19-2006 12:19 PM

You can't trust anyone when rebuilding a trans/motor can you? :? I hope I never have problems.

You really can't trust anyone.... Its easier to rebuild an engine than it is a Trans.... But when you go to torque all of the Main and rod caps, First off all of the clearances have to be within range... Then all of the Bolts have to be torqued in steps and in sequence....

When you install the crank, after you lube the bearings with assembly lube, being careful not to touch the face of the bearings.... Insert the bearings into the block main journals... And the Main caps.... After lubing the bearings you can set the crank in place.... Then take the lubed main caps/bearings and install them in their proper place.... Torque in steps and sequence per the service manual, Once you are done, the crank should turn pretty free with no binding in a 360* roatation, nice and smooth... If it doesn't you have an issue...

we have seen a few builders here that created more throuble than they solved...

Though I have no experience, if I ever needed an engine rebuild I'd prefer to do it myself with the help of the knowledgable people here. I don't know if I could trust anyone to do it. Especially a trans, but that's something I wouldn't even try to do.

Maymybonnieliveforevr 11-19-2006 02:58 PM

I know of a Bonne motor that's running fairly well. Those that know me know which one I'm talking about.

:(

JimmyFloyd 11-19-2006 08:56 PM

that sound is unfortunately familiar. That's what my car sounded like when I got it.

So what's the plan now for the car? pulling the motor to see what's up exactly?

PEARL_JAM 11-19-2006 09:48 PM

Ouch! It didn't look like it affected the valvetrain any(piston to valve damage), otherwise the motor would skip. Yours looked like it was idling smooth(just loud)

Is that part number for a Series I or Series II long block?

bonnie94ssei 11-19-2006 09:57 PM

Wow that video is scary.

1993 SLE 11-19-2006 10:04 PM

"that is starting to sound bad eh?"

Cheetah 11-19-2006 10:40 PM

Dude, I am sorry to hear that - nails down a chalkboard :x

yes when we first started it it was quiet but after about 2 mins, it started getting really bad

SSEimatt93 11-20-2006 01:25 AM

as the oil gets hotter, and more thin, the clearneces start to enlarge, hence the heavy knocking...80w90 oil in there would quiet it up too, for a few minutes..
Here that slapping noise?
Hello Connecting rod.

GreenMachine98 11-20-2006 03:34 AM

That sucks, well now you have all winter to tear it part and put it back together! good luck ;)

PEARL_JAM 11-20-2006 06:31 AM

Pull the pan. Should only take 30mins to see what happened.

sandrock 11-20-2006 09:48 AM

...and I just tossed all my L67 rods in the dumpster too

At the VERY least, a new crankshaft (or have your existing one turned if damage to the journal isn't too bad), new rod and main bearings, and new rods on the affected cylinders. I feel your pain...

Yeah buddy it was pretty bad...

And iirc your video sounded a little worse... But close to the same

Guys and Gals the sound you hear is a spinning bearing.. Not good.... Do not start that car anymore if you plan on rebuilding..
