Default Two car fun

A sort of extension of the usual weekend antics.... We have a story from last night.

Once upon a time............Dad'* 96 Grand Am has some crappy looking motor that says "3100" proudly on the top. A couple years ago before the aluminum gaskets were available, I swapped them out, while swearing at the top of my lungs and yelling "WTF!!!" for many hours. No doubt am I spolied by woring on nearly 100% 3800'* all the time. Dad'* car had a leak and without hesitation I informed Dan (lover of the 3100'*) that it was payback time for help I've given him. (Insert swearing and "Envoy" motor ). Picked up the gasket set, oil, coolant, couple sodas (pop for some of you) and a 30 pack of wings.
Typical arrival finds another car on the lift, you'd think it was his business or somethin. 94 Buick LT1 overheating. While he fixed the thermostat on that, I wandered over to an 00 Impala with it'* new motor laying next to it. Finsihed up the prep work while he knocked out the LT1, pushed the Impala onto the lift at 6ish, drove it out of the bay at 9pm (included 20 minutes of battery charging). In came Dad'* GA. Diagnosis was the *** distributor plug is leaking. Lovely design here, a distributor was no longer needed and they put in a plug with a gear on it...which coincidently is a common leak area. Since we have to pull the upper manifold, we may as well do the LIM'* with at the same time. We worked swifty, laughing at some of the engineering marvels of the engine. Then I got him good when I chose to put on the PITA coil pack bracket/Evap putting me on the driverside and leaving him with the passenger fender and the alternator. He struggled for a healthy 20 minutes with the alt'* cover and rear bracket (hooks to LIM stud). If you've ever b4en there on this setup you are laughing as I was. Pulled the car out at 11:30-midnight. Running like a champ and ready for another few miles. :Thumbs
FWIW, the 3100 isn't that bad if you are a blind contortionist with terrets. I'm sure I could do this in about 4 hours. The person who bring me that job, better bring lots of money or be related, I'm going to hug a 3800 and profess my love to them today.

hahahaha nice story there Bill. The 3100 is a good motor though my Corsica had one in it and had somewhere around 200K and was still running strong.

Don't forget the Gimpala that was fixed in the process. Kinda like it was "in the way".

Didn't mention that the rotors were nicely warped or something. When it was in the air, I noticed the rotors missing little pieces on the facing. Danno commented that he see'* that frequently on cheap rotors. The metal is not that good and it'* common. When I got in the car, I tried to put the drivers window down. It said nothing.

Just ordered another $110 in rotors and a window regulator. Somehow in the process of ordering the rotors and asking the price on the regulator, I picked up the job of fixing a regulator about to fail in an 00 LeSabre that belongs to the Commercial Account guy at the parts desk.

You're not going to enjoy the window regulator.
