Transmission question.
Ok, I hope this is the proper forum. So I don't really know much about cars. I'm a college kid and I just drive my car...get tune-ups, do what they say to do at Meineke. Recently my Bonne started slipping when shifting gears really bad, so I went to Cottman'* transmission and apparently I need a new tranny or a re-build because one of the discs is burnt out and the car isn't going into second gear. My question is this. I have the guy that sold me the car, he'* a family friend who could put one in if I bought it. Would you guys suggest looking for a tranny on my own? the quote from Cottman was 2500 dollars and with insurance that won't work. Are transmissions from junkyards relatively available, or even a good idea? How would I know if the transmission is a good buy or in good condition?Has anyone ever had to go through this? This forum has always been the most help I've ever had when dealing with my Bonne so I figure'd I would throw it out there. Thanks guys.

There is a lot to explain here...
In general you will want to find a low mileage unit.. And being that you have an SSE and being a 1997 you will have the 4T60-E( Your Vin should be something like 1G2HY52K<---- K being the engine Code...
If you go to a yard looking for a trans you want to make sure the trans has fluid in it that isn't burnt( Black or Close to it ) with a Fried smell...... The fluid should be Pinkish/Redish with a Hint of Brown...
In all actuality any 95-97 4T60-E with a 3.06 Ratio should work for you...
Sandrock and Myself will be rebuilding mine later this year.... Even with a Tranny from the LKQ( Pick apart ) for the rebuild so I can keep driving my car, and the Parts and Master kit for the rebuild it might cost me $500 total...
There is a lot of Labor in rebuilding a trans from removing it to rebuilding and then what ever hard parts you may need and then the install back into the car... Things tend to get a bit expensive..
I have 161K on my car, the trans is Original and getting tired.... Honestly I thought my Trans would go first..... I was wrong the Motor took a crap first..
The cheapest route would be to find a low mileage unit at the wrecker, with the right color fluid and have you family member install the trans.. You never know you may get a lot out of the trans..
And what part of Mass are you in?

I recently bought a complete L32 from him and he is a great guy to deal with, I have not heard of one person who was unhappy doing buisness with him.

thank you Jr for the info on your experience and Mcgrath I will definitely PM you. It seems like the best idea is to try and fix this instead of looking for a new vehicle as I have just 99,000 miles and could expect a few mores years out of this car. this whole thing is a bummer as I don't think I really screwed it up, I'm a pretty easy driver and all...but I guess stuff happens.
