I think some of the sensors changed. I believe even the electronic gear selection is inside the case as opposed to the outside of the case.

I'm not sure with your year range, but in the mid-90'*, they went from a fine pitch, to a reverse pitch, normal pitch etc. So, some would interchange, some would not.
