welp............

I messed around with it for a while on Monday. First went to the local pick an pull to aquire some cheap parts, grabbed a MAP and a TPS wanted a MAF but every car that had the style of mine already had it pulled (apparently there is an issue with those ). Spent a whole $18 thought that it was worth it. In any case I went home to tinker. Started the car and it did the start stall thing a couple times. So I pulled the plug on the MAF and the car started right up. Left it run for a few minutes idling no issues. After it was warm I attempted the same test drive and had no problems. Pulled the MAF out took it back to the parts store, argued with the guy behind the counter for a few minutes, got a replacement and I installed it. Took it for a drive and had no problems.

Wife drove it around that night and to work yesterday, everything AOK!

Thanks for the update. So the rebuilt MAF was defective?

It sure sounds like he had a defective MAF.

Oh and Clay, 2 reasons why you never see MAF sensors in the JY. 1. They cost over $120 at the store new, and 2. they are easy to pocket. And I think there is a 3rd reason, maybe something about the rare metal inside.

No there were plenty of them out there, but none were the ones I needed. Also hard to find for that car were MAP Sensors. Looks like around the year 99 is when they changed to the style MAF that I need, only saw a handful of cars out there that should have had it......

The other thing I found interesting was that probably 1/3 of the Series 2 3.8L in the lot had suffered engine fires. I wonder if that was all due to the Recall that went out a while back for a spark plug tube?

Oh, in my yard. All of the 3800 MAF sensors are GONE! That'* why I'm trying to convert to the 4.3L style MAF.

Yes, the recall is due to the sparkplug wire holder on the front bank of the engine. Oil seeps out of the valve cover, coats the wire holder and drips further onto the exhaust manifold.

I fought the same issue on my '01 SS M/C for over 1 year. Put an AC Delco sensor on it and NO MORE ISSUE!

I suspect you should check the timing since you had a head job done it is very common that you might be a tooth off.

I would also have your catalytic converter checked it is not uncommon that they get clogged and could cause it to not be releasing back pressure properly.

this model hasent had timing to check since 1987

Jw is right that vehicle has timimg but not adjustable. That vehicle would not of had the timing touched when doing a head job.
