From what I have heard and read, the Valentine is the best one out there. But they are kinda high.
I have a cheap Uniden that works great. I have had it a couple of years, I think I paid $100 for it. It has different sounds for the different bands, so you can tell them apart. It isn't as bad about sounding false readings as my older Uniden. It is funny when I'm speeding down the highway and I see another car with a radar detector on the windshield and we approach a cell tower or something. He'll slow down because of the false reading.
Like I always tell my friends that don't have one, "It'* cheaper than the cost of a ticket. If it saves you from one ticket, it has paid for itself."

I have the beltronics 980 or something like that works GREAT! Saved me from a few tickets. Got it at circuit city with warranty. Replaced it once because it wouldnt come alive when it was in the car during the summer (outside temp gets up to 125 here), it got sooo hot I couldnt even touch it.

IMO, escort and beltronics are the best on the market (i believe they are the same company anyways)

if i had the money right now i would buy this one:
http://www.escortradar.com/9500i-inside-look.htm

(im also lucky and can get it for $320 with my sisters discount at ultimate electronics)

I have a Cobra for $100, yea it picks up false alarms, but the idea is to be reminded to drive slowly, not necessarily to beat the cops.

Go Bel or go home. There are better, but not worth the price IMO. Bel is the best quality for the buck.

I have a Cobra, not sure of the model @ the moment since I'm at work. But, it'* not bad...it DOES pick up alot of false alarms, but mostly only when you don't switch it to City mode while driving in urban areas.

I'm a little concerned with the range...it seems like very often I'm right on top of the cop before it starts going off...but then again, that could be the instant-on stuff. But for $100 @ RadioShack...I'd definitely recommend it. It also gives voice notification about Trains, Emergency Vehicles, and other stuff.

I just got a Whistler one recently. Cost about $80. I haven't heard good things about the Brand though and I already had to exchange the first one cause it broke. So maybe I will but a different one but I want a red display and I wanna keep it under $150
