Question for willwren...

If I remember correctly, you mentioned before that you have the heated windshield. I was browsing your site, and I don't see the button for it. Where is it?

willwren 02-11-2004 12:02 PM

It's automatic. (unfortunately). I wish I had manual control over it. Comes on with defrost. I pull the 60-amp fuse in the spring, put it back in the fall. It's a huge load on the system, especially at night.

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 01:17 PM

Weird. In my manual, it shows the button on the dash, right where you have your cell. I wonder why auto? Is you windshield kinda tinted like a Lincoln?

willwren 02-11-2004 01:21 PM

Yours is a 92......my 93 owners manual doesn't even LIST the option. Nor does it show a switch. They must have made a change between 92 and 93 (there are other differences...your sunroof interior and exterior trim are different than mine, as is the switch to open it, and a few other minor interior cosmetics).

Like what? Inform me.

willwren 02-11-2004 01:40 PM

Go to my website, and click on the link under the list of links....the gallery. You'll see pics of the exterior and interior sunroof pics on my car and Justin's 92 SSEi. Obvious differences. I recall the door panels or at least the speaker grilles in the doors being different, too, and maybe the ashtray in the center console...but that may only be the SE. I might be mistaken on that one.

The 92 and 93 are actually more different cosmetically and mechanically under the hood than most are aware of.

Other differences:

Car colored wheels were not available on the SSEi in 93, but were in 92. CV retainer clips were improved in 93 (not sure about the shafts themselves), rockers and heads differed between 92/93, Exhaust manifolds are slightly different (regardless of the lack of EGR in the non-SC models), and the balance shaft is different....in what way, I don't know.

willwren 02-11-2004 02:30 PM

Damn you. Got me thinking again. Not only are the differences between the 92/93 surprising (especially when you excect them to be identical, like I did), but on top of all that, my car is really a freak of nature all by itself. From the RPO sticky:

Big discrepancies in mine.
Options my car has, but the RPO label doesn't list:

UV6-Head up display
AU0-Keyless entry
C50-Heated windshield
KG9-140amp Alternator (mine is listed as K68-105amp, but the 140 was on the car, and goes with the heated WS option)

Codes not on our list in Techinfo, but listed on my label:
NB2-CA emissions
N73-Wheels-custom sport, variation 4
QVF-Z-rated tires (did my car actually ship from the factory with Z's?)
643-Beige leather trim

Codes I have listed that I can't decipher:
R6K
R9Y
6JC
7JB

And my label says I have 8ZB and 9ZB, which sound like the electronic struts, which I DON'T have (thank god), but could these mean ELC instead?
I didn't even know I had a heated windshield until I replaced it last year. Same thing on the Alternator. It was the factory installed unit that I replaced with the DP 160.

The only information I know about the history of my car is that it was a corporate fleet vehicle for an unknown company......with a $30k price tag, it was likely a company executive's car (our fleet cars at hp are POS Taurus's). I'm GUESSING that the next owner took the car when he retired. I bought it from the wholesaler that bought it from his widow after he died.

Now the discrepancies in the RPO list MIGHT be explained if this were a factory order, and the order was changed while the car was being built. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

And don't forget about my rear steering ;)

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 04:37 PM

I knew about most that stuff. Engine internals, etc.
My sunroof is like the one in pic 105. Pic 104 appears to be an aftermarket sunroof. My outside seal look just like pic 131. 105 and 131 are your roof, correct?
I have the same door panels and speaker grills you do. "Lower" radio options have one speaker in the doors with an oval grille.
Our drivers airbag covers are different. I have no Pontiac dart on my steering wheel, just the word Pontiac.
Same ashtray.
I've seen 93's with the same 92 wheels, but not color matched, just grey.

Where did you see that rear steer light?

Rear Steer

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 07:21 PM

There is an actual light?!?

105 and 131 are mine (93). I have no trim around the sunroof opening. 104 and 130 are Justins 92. And this sunroof is FACTORY. Confirmed. Not aftermarket.

Rear steering light is also in that gallery. One of the same pages you were on.

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 07:30 PM

I saw the pic, I thought it was photoshop or something.

I've never seen another sunroof and button like Justin's.

ssesc93 02-11-2004 07:34 PM

I have to get a flashlight to see if my rear steer is there.

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 07:37 PM

I was thinking the same thing.

willwren 02-11-2004 07:41 PM

 You have to rip the cluster out to get to it. You need to pull the bulb out of the back of the cluster and shine a flashlight in from the rear to see it.

It's POSSIBLE you might be able to read it from the front with a bright enough light source held at a particular angle. I'd be curious to see how many other cars have this.

ssesc93 02-11-2004 08:00 PM

cool
8)

pfogle 02-11-2004 08:20 PM

Hmm.... what's the quickest way to see if I too, have a heated windshield?

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 09:31 PM

I'll be darned, guess what I have...

a very rare option, it seems...

willwren 02-11-2004 09:31 PM

C50-Heated windshield on your RPO label. You should also have the 140amp alternator, rather than the 105 to go with it.

KG9-140amp Alternator (mine is listed as K68-105amp, but the 140 was on the car, and goes with the heated WS option)

1992 trofeo 02-11-2004 09:36 PM

I have a de-ice button, but its been known to come on automaticly...

bonnie94ssei 02-11-2004 09:39 PM

I might have a heated windshield. I'd check my RPO codes now but I can't get my trunk open :x

willwren 02-11-2004 09:43 PM

You must not have the RPO for that. Use a cutting torch on the trunk lid just forward of the spoiler. Check for this RPO code:

POS (opening trunk lid)

I hope the border patrol doesn't ask me to pop the trunk in March. My trunk button alone isn't doing it like it used to before winter.

Or

PMS (ajar any door when ready)

willwren 02-11-2004 09:49 PM

Pete, will the trunk lid open if you press down on it while someone presses the button?

It takes a little while, but yes it does work. I didn't try that tonight, but it always opens that way. The key does NOT turn the lock at all though. I got some new trunk stoppers from FlyBoy but they don't seem to be the solution.

willwren 02-11-2004 10:20 PM

I know what your problem is. I had it, and fixed it :P

BonneMeMN 02-11-2004 10:21 PM

How'd you wire up your speakers then?

J Wikoff 02-11-2004 10:22 PM

Anyone else find their Rear Steer light yet?

willwren 02-11-2004 10:22 PM

He got the skinny underfed neighbor kid to crawl through the passthru in the back seat.

I did the speakers before it was really cold out. For some reason the trunk popped open fine then. Usually I just pull up on the trunk lid a few times, and then go and push the button, and it opens. Tonight it didn't do it at all, and I didn't feel like getting my dad to come outside and press the button for me while I pressed down on the trunk.

Will, I remember you told me about having the same problem. I haven't tried to lube the lock yet. But I don't now if it's just the lock that's the problem, or the button too.

willwren 02-11-2004 10:59 PM

I'll write up a Techinfo on this. It seems fairly common. Your lid might be frozen shut. Get some teflon or silicon lube on the seals next time you get it open!

I'll get it open tomorrow somehow.

J Wikoff 02-12-2004 03:02 AM

I found my rear steer light.

willwren 02-12-2004 03:03 AM

Cool! We need an SE from 92 and 93 to see if it's there, now that we know the 92/93 SSE/SSEi has it. And some cars from 94/95????

J Wikoff 02-16-2004 05:14 PM

So, is your wind shield visually different than a non-heated one?

J Wikoff 02-23-2004 02:33 AM

Quote from 92 owners manual about heated windshield:

Heated Windshield (Option)
Your vehicle may be equipped with an electrically heated windshield (DE-ICE). When you press the DE-ICE button, it will stay on for about four minutes. But if you put your transaxle in gear within two minutes, the system will go off at the end of the first two minutes. If you shift into geat after the first two minutes, the system will go off.

Note that the electrically heated windshild will decrease the effective distance of some add-on electronic devices, such as garage door openers.

willwren 02-23-2004 02:38 AM

I'm going to have to dig through my owner's manual again. I don't remember anything like that in mine.
