Just heard today on CNN that there could have been brake problems on the jetliner that caused the brakes to deploy later then needed. So at this point it appears there was a mechanical problem that contributed.

I think in those conditions (ie weather) the plane should have been diverted to O'Hare instead of Midway, granted O'Hare was open and active at the time.

I watched it the night it happened. I seen the interviews with the witnesses, and from what they said, the front gear did break but only AFTER it ran through a wall. So the front landing gear was not one of the reasons for the crash.

But if you read the story linked above, you will see that there may have been mechanical problems. I also heard ( the night of the crash) that some of the pilots were interviewed and the way they explained it, the plane in question has a sort of automatic landing procedure, but one thing it relies on is wheel spin. So when it lands the wheel HAVE to get up to speed to activate the process, which includes the brakes coming on automatically. I think weather had a big deal to play in it, but also the size of the airport. I could not believe how tight that airport is wedged into there. Granted it was built first and all other development came later, but still.

At least that... I started up my car and cleaned my windows, came back in 5 min. and it looked like I never cleaned my car. Then the road were horrable and vision was minimal at most - It took me over an hour to go less then 6 miles down the road from my house.
