Default Missing Splash Shield...This is odd.

I decided to replace my endlinks and paint my calipers this weekend. I noticed that there was no rear splash shield in the fender well on the left (driver'*) side, but there was one on the right. (see pics). I also noticed that there were no holes on the left side to insert the plastic attaching pins. I checked my parts manual and noted there is only one shield listed. I called local GM dealer and the parts guy confirmed that there should be only one. Does anyone else have a similar situation? It seems odd there would not be one on each side, but the lack of attaching holes seems to indicate there is not supposed to be one there. :?

You've got me wondering now. I don't recall a shield on the driverside.

Hmmmm, funny how I can't exactly recall either. Now, I'll have to look.

Hmmm. If I am correct, there isn't one. The '97 SSE I looked at didn't have one, and there are no holes for the push in holders either.

EDIT - Just went out and looked at my '92, I don't have one either, nor the mounting holes.

Mine -

This is very ironic. I was under our 01 GS Saturday night replacing the brakes. I noticed the EXACT same thing. The holes are drilled for a splash shield, but there isn't one on either side.

I'm thinking the right side splash shield is just to keep moisture off the belts so they don't squeal. Why would GM care if water splashes onto the tranny case on the left side?

I agree, that seems like the most likely reason. GM wouldn't spend a penny just to have both sides look the same.

What'* the best way to mount a splash guard or two? Can you drill your own holes? I'm sure it would help keep the engine bay cleaner. Mine had funky stuff all over it.

The funky stuff was probably the grease from that CV joint that blew out a while back.

CV joint? Sam'* Club installed a wheel on the car when the previous owner had it, but they forgot the lug nuts. The wheel flew off and broke the fender as well as some suspension pieces. Hence my work whorage post in Your Ride. Since the repair from the incident, the tie rod ends have gotten so bad that they're cracked and squished. One is blatantly not a tie rod end anymore. Is this too much time for CV joint stuff to stay on?
