If you're going to go ahead and replace the engine, why not go with the Chevy 350? Way easier and cheaper to achieve a given amount of horsepower and your headers will transfer.

Yeah, I've heard that. If they do in fact transfer, I will go with the 350. Gas Mileage might be more of a problem.. but it wont be worse than what I was getting anyway.

Don, wont a 350 leave more future performance doors open? and if built and tuned properly should get about the same mileage as a 305?

The problem is, if I buy a 350 from a salvage yard, chances are good that I will have to rebuild it. That added to the swap and cost of the engine is WAY too high for me... a complete rebuilding (replace all moving parts) in my 305 is $1500... I know the mechanic, and I know their work is very good. But thats still a bit out of my price range. My parents wont pay for it, because I caused the failure.. so its all me on this one. :(

Usually 305'* and 350'* are pretty good in terms of durability... I don't know what happened to your engine But I would like to know what the outcome is, and what brought the engine to its demise...

What kind of sound are you talking about? It it a severe knocking such as a rod pounding the block, or the piston punching the cylinder head( you can't miss this sound )... Is it a loud ticking that will not go away?

There is a possibility that you may have spun a bearing...

How were you reving the engine??? Were you doing it to no extreme, or just enough to hear the exahust growl? Also how many miles did the engine have on it?

At this point I'm not totally sure you parents can completely balme you, Heck it may have had low oil pressure for a long time( just to the point where it didn't trip off the oil pressure light) and chewed up the bearings... Being that the car is 21 years old, anything can be the culprit at this point... Let us know how everything goes..
Yes, it is a very loud ticking that is louder when you are under the engine, near the pan. The ticks seem to go along with the engine speeds.
The engine has 180k miles and has already been rebuilt once.
Basically I was revving it in park for a friend who wanted to hear it with duals & headers. I revved it pretty hard (which I will never ever do again) and once I stopped it started ticking. I kinda freaked out and drove home like a grandma on painkillers.

According to the mechanics that I showed the engine was giving out, and probably wouldnt last a month. If I drove it hard at all, even less.
