Thanks, but I've read that forwards, backwards, upside-down and sideways, and nowhere do I see the slightest hint that GM has the right to remotely shut your vehicle down and void your warranty if you are going over 160km/h. I'd really like to see the references for that.

I know from OnStar'* own advertising that they can track the current location of a specific moving car, as well as do things like unlock it if the owner'* locked himself out, but shutting down a moving car or voiding a warranty is news to me. (I mean, let'* get real here: You want to talk about liability issues? What would their liability be if they shut down a moving vehicle by remote control and caused a 6-car pileup as a result?)

"Sir your vehicle was not designed to go at speeds over 160km/h if you do not slow down within 30seconds we will remotly shut your vehicle off, oh and incendently your warranty is now void"

Under the guise of convenience GM is protecting itself and pleasing other interested. It is "good business" but as usual it is another device that I would suggest disarming. I have a computer chip company who can do this for you. The part that is very important is there is no way to justify them making you keep it operational once you own the car. That type of “forced” tracking is easier to stop.

In the article it says something about a GPS be in this black box, or was just in the vehicle? Anyways I think it'd be sort-of cool if one could hack it to get readings from it and display it on some kind of device, I'm thinking a serial device like a palm pilot or similar item.

Oh I'd like to say something in defense of this black box.
Remember it records things like speed and braking.
It could save you in a lawsuit. Say that they say you didn't stop at that light or sign, or that you didn't try to avoid hitting them, when in-fact you did hit the brakes.

every vehicle in the last 8-10 years that GM has made also has a GPS
I don't think they all have GPS.... I find that VERY hard to believe, it woulda had a lot of publicity,,,

A switch keeps the control in the hands of the user. I personally suggest tampering
Just for the record GM can remove it if you wish. You can also order your car without the device but you will have to push hard to get there.
