i disagree that older people are more likely to maintain cars and be more affluent....some older folks have limited funds and mobility, so they can't get under the car to change the oil....others won't bother to take the time, or else they forget...i hate to stereotype, but that'* how i see it, although you are all right about the cars not being driven hard

Olds 88s are o.k. I guess. I had a 93' but gave it to my dad. I hated the sluggish performance and outdated interior without a tach. I feel bad for my dad as that car has nickle and dimed him to death. You now are thinking how can you not care much for 88s when you drive a LSS? Well, aside from the exterior similarities it is a totally different car. Suspension, engine, trans, and interior are all different. Its like comparing a V6 stang to a KB Cobra.

Yeah the 94s are different. They have the updated interior, and a few other little goodies, such as I was told, that most of the '94s had the sport axle ratio.

I had a 87 Olds. I finally got rid of it just because it was so dated. One of the most reliable cars I ever owned. 237k and it still started right up, purred, and the tranny was fine. Never had any service work done to it. It was like the Everyready Bunny.

one of the things i go by on reliability for vehicles is the "hillbilly" club back where i used to live.

it was a very small town of 300 or so and a lot of the houses have the remains of several cars that were bought at or near the end of their lives and driven into the ground. i'm sure if you're from a small country town you know exactly who i'm referring too.

2 of the most common vehicles i see around there are FWD buick lesabres and olds 88'*. this says to me they are very strong cars, as most of the time these cars are bought dirtcheap, put on the road with a shoestring and survive mostly on back roads and maintenance that consists of "when it stops moving, i'll fix it!" not because no one cares but usually money is tight enough that that is the only time they spend money on the car.

these are the same people i remember as a kid running old slant six valiants and darts which as we all know were not only bulletproof but hand grenade proof, so if the olds 88 is a good enough replacement for those cars, yeah i think i'd say its reliable!

I used to own a 94 Olds 88 identical to the one pictured.

I found it to be the biggest POS known to man. There'* a 5 or 6 page thread about in the Other 3800s forum. Read through it. I ended up giving it away to a needy family from work.

It had the 2.74 gear ratio. As mentioned, 99% of them do.
