Been running synthetics for a long time here... Even the 91 has Mobil 1 in it... Not a single issue... Neither of the use or leak oil...

Both dure for an oil change tho..
Psst, go change oil.

Karl.. sometimes sludge has built up and is sealing possbile leaks. That'* the horror of changing. It'* really a non issue if you didn't have leaks at one time. Or shouldn't be I should say.

I heard the same warnings, and really worried about it. And I finally decided that instead of thinking it to death, I'd just give it a shot. Changed from having dino oil all it'* life to full synth at 98k (or thereabouts), with nary a problem. I had a small oil leak before, and I've got a small oil leak after. I did the oil pan gasket as a preventative measure (it'* super easy to do), and it runs like a champ. I no longer have my oil pressure all over the gauge - it just stays right at about 45 psi, no matter how hot or cold it is.

So I guess my moral to the story is, you have no idea until you try. I find that a lot of people are afraid of synthetic (I've even had people try to tell me that it would hurt my motor), or are scared of its higher price (which can be made up in longer oil change intervals, which I personally use, but many here scoff at). Give it a shot - worse thing that can happen is you identify a couple of gaskets that need replacing.

I've been using the Valvoline Max Life for years. The '91 GP that my daughter drives has over 230,000 miles on it, and no problems. Is that because of that particular oil, or just regulare 3k/3month oil changes, I can't say.

Meh.... whatever happened to that link from a motorcycle forum, where one of the GM engineers was talking about oil makeup and life. From his comments I was led to understand that Mobil wouldn't really make a difference in our cars, and that even if an oil could last longer than 3000 miles between changes it wasn't wise to go over that interval. Anybody else remember that thread?

I don't think it would be advantageous for me to switch to a higher mileage oil. Car is still under extended warranty for another 12000 mi. Just in case something happens,I want to have the 3k mi oil change reciepts.
