As soon as I read the first post of this thread, this is exactly what I was going to say. They have NO right to hold your property hostage. I would have called the cops when they refused to give you your car back. I guarantee if you did you would not have had to pay $700.

Sorry about your situation though. I'd definitely "write it off," though I'm sure it'* not easy to let a scummy shop like that get away with 'robbery.'
