FelPro Dropping the ball big time.
When I checked GMPD last month, they had it listed under both part numbers..

I ordered one last night from them under the new one - didn't try the old number as I didn't want to spend the extra $1.35.

89017816 (the original P/N listed)
It does seem to vary by Dealer/Location/something. Or maybe they just have old P/Ns in their system down here. :?
The 89017825 is for 1997 -> up Supercharged engines.
The 89017816 is for 1997 -> up Non-supercharged (K) engines.
They are both metal framed gaskets!
However, 89017400 which is for 1996 (and other) model non-supercharged engines is NOT metal framed. Grrr..
I had all three in my hands. There did not seem to be any difference in the metal framed (97 -> up) gaskets at all. The only difference I could find (other than construction material) between 89017816 and 89017400 is the guide pins on the rubber (bumpers) that seal the IM to the engine block. (These pins are easily cut off, and will be!)
Just to make sure, we checked the PNs for the cylinder heads and Lower Intake Manifolds on both 1996 and 1997. They are the same.
Since those two are the ones that are being joined by the metal framed gaskets and since the "guide pins" for the rubber bumpers can easily be cut off (if needed) there is no reason to think that these are not compatible.
So, I have the newer model 89017816 gasket set, not the 89017400 (1996 version) that I expected to get.
Will report more later.
I got a pleasant surprise last week when I got my 89017816 LIM gasket set at my local GM dealer. For some reason, they discounted the $57.82 list to $45.00 net. Similar discount on the coolant elbow. Naturally I didn't argue. Anybody else seeing this happening?
They obviously keep them readily at hand, so just for grins I asked the parts guy if they were putting them into later models (like 2000 and beyond). He said yup, if they're getting miles on 'em. I would assume he means over 80K or so.

Okay so the new metal LIM works perfectly in a 1996 (K) engine. So do the rubber end seals (even though I don't have the mounting holes on the Engine block).
It only had 82K miles on it when the UIM had "the" problem. It had 55K mile on it when I got it in April 2005! Put in a 180 deg thermostat too.
Well, it is back, and better performing than I remember! Here'* pics of the transformation.
Sorry I missed a few steps because we REALLY got going and forgot about the camera for a while.
