Default Digital Mileage Question

On a car with digital mileage does the car computer store that exact mileage that the car has or doe the whole cluster with the gauges store it becausemy friend has an 2003 ssei bonnie and had had an accident and the airbag blew out the cluster. He wanted to know this because his car only had 72,000 miles on it and he didnt want to go buy another guage cluster with like 130,000 or something like that on it so he couldnt sell it

When I replaced the cluster in my 93 the milage increased by 8500 miles. The cluster itself keeps track of the mileage but I have heard that some vehicles also keep it in the PCM for verification. I don"t know if this applies for the Bonneville or not.

he could just get a new cluster and have the dealer program the cluster to the correct milage

See on the 93 (like mines) it has the manual odometer, so if you had 78,000 miles on your car and had to get a new cluster that read 199,999 miles that the mileage the car would have(unless you know how to turn it back!...........................But dont do it, its illegal lol!)

And i never though going to a dealer for that i didnt even know they could. Do you have any idea of what type of paper work you should bring other than the title and i.d. They would probably want something to prove that it was stolen. And also to answer my question, that mean that the mileage is stored in the pcm. Right?

not sure, i know that Jimmyfloyd (i think) scanned his Z34 and found the mileage on the dash was sightly off than the reading on the scantool, do you have access to a scantool?

and yes the dealer can do milage adjustments, you just need to provide proof of ownership, milage and the sorta thing

Are the guages blown, or just the clear plastic panel?
If it'* just the clear piece you can replace that without replacing the cluster.

Yea... on OBD II The PCM should hold the mileage as well. I ran AutoTap on my 98 LTZ and found a discrepency between the PCM and my mechanical Odometer. I would assume the guage cluster and the PCM both keep the Mileage. Your best bet would be to take it to a dealer and have them reprogram it if possible. That way, it can be verified when it is done and no one can call him out on it later.

No the airbag had torn thewhole thing up. So if he gets another one in i plug it in for him his mileage should be the same as before?

Not sure on that one. the gauge cluster might have the mileage internally stored in it. but since the PCM has the mileage as well, a dealer could re-program the new cluster with your previous mileage I would assume.
