Rich stopped by last night to drop a tool off for me and inquired to how I stored my crankshaft. I said laying on its side? Why, what gives? I didn't see any problem as long as nothing was touching the journals. Apparently, there is something like an old wives tale that if you store a crank on its side, it will eventually warp or sag.

I spent the last 15 minutes searching this phenomenon and I can't find a accurate reliable source as to the accuracy of this tale.

Though I did find many people that HAD stored their crank on its side for 10-20 years and it was STILL within tolerance. Even within .0001

Personally, if something is stored standing up, you increase its chances of tipping over by 50%. And once you tip a crank over, you might as well scrap it. Just like a long gun.

LOL. If cranks were that delicate they would twist. Like a pretzel from torque
I would cover with a light covering of oil.

i would just put some oil on it too and keep it out of the way of anything that may fall on it.

Store it in an engine, silly.

It kinda like they say to store rotors flat. But every parts store I have been into has them on the side (end).

No, you can't do that, it will warp because it is laying on it'* side!
