Default Check Engine Code

Got a check engine light, went to Auto Zone and they put the diag tool on it, Code is PO440 Evap Emmission Control System. Anybody know what this means, and is there a way to reset it to see if it happens again? Autozone said that they used to reset them but can't anymore because they got a nasty letter from the state emmision people.

When I had the evap code..the mechanic asked if i put gas in the car while it was running...If you do that then stop..Not only is it dangerous but the fuel system is pressurized.

Default evap code

Neverrrrrr mind. I called the dealer and they told me that it was probably the gas cap. They told me to take it off and put it back on, then come into the dealership and they would reset it. I did what they said and started to drive to the dealership and the light went off! Whew, I was worried because I have to have an emmisions test on it tomorrow. Thanks for your help, and remember that code could just be a loose gas cap (even though mine didn't feel loose when I checked it).

With that code, it'* usually either the gas cap (preventing the tank from pressurizing....that happened to me once in my 98Z71) or the purge solonoid on the charcoal canister. Both inexpensive fixes. Good luck, and tell us how it turns out.

DTC P0440 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System
Glad to see you got it covered, as that'* what I was going to you to do. We at the dealership see about 12 of these a day on average, all because some people keep forgeting about the gas cap.
