This sounds very familiar. Did you do the self-adjustment after?
Try backing up quickly for a few feet, then braking moderately hard. Do this several times, and that might take care of the problem.
The self-adjusting star-nut on the rear brakes is operated by the shoes being torqued to the rear, and all the manuals will recommend this procedure after a brake job.
