Default Brake upgrade

okay well it time to redo the brakes on my truck the front pads are getting bad so it time to do pads rotors drums shoes etc. Im not worried so much about the rear but for the front can i skimp out and by regular rotors and just drill them myself (have my step dad do it he a machinist ).Cause i do haul heavy loads (its a heavy half ton basically a 3/4 ton) but i want to make my brakes better without alot of coin so if i drill them myself can will i compromise anything i.e will they warp/crack or anything like that
