Bonneville vs Civic Si??

Just a question for y'all. My friend has a 2000 Civic Si, everything is stock with a 5-speed. I must admit i love riding with him and i respect the power he's got- nothing like powerslides around corners with all four wheels screaming. I'm impressed by his take-off too, and he would never think of putting a fart can or wing on it.....

So how do you think his car would match up with my '94 SSEi? I don't have any mods on mine yet. I wanted to get some but i just spent $1700 at the dealer fixing ABS problems which were all unexpected. BTW the dealer really screwed me over so stay away from Covington Buick in Silver Spring MD...but that's another story. :)

I THINK my friend said he has like 160 hp or something(?) What do you guys think of a matchup? I believe it is almost inevitable that we'll try someday....

Jim W 06-05-2003 10:11 AM

If you are rolling in a 94 SSEi, then you're packin 225HP and 275 ft-lbs of torque.

He has what? 160, and a lighter car...I think you'd still take it 8)

Mario Rosso 06-05-2003 10:19 AM

Well I don't have any advice on the si question but I could advise a better dealer. Try Burdette Brothers Pontiac near Clarksburg, MD just off of 355. It might be a little far for you but it might be worth it. I have been buying cars from them and having them work on them for over 11 years, and they are an hour away from me. They are real nice and their techs are real sharp. I think Nytro67 will back me up on this, he brings his car there too.

Good luck!

Any idea what the torque differenc is? I bet the SSEi will crush the Si in that figure.

hahaha.. my 95 SSEi has well over TWICE the torque that that thing has, and 100 more HP to boot! If I ever get up next to one they will be :owned:

Paulnold 06-05-2003 11:16 AM

lol

After I eat some taco's and refried bean's my butt has twice the amount of torque than the si does :bouncingflame:

Jim W 06-05-2003 11:23 AM

  I bet brnvs is ready to take on the SI now 8)

smellbird 06-05-2003 11:48 AM

Yeah that should be an easy one. Even if he has V-tech or dual stage runners or sake powered engine.

brnvs 06-05-2003 02:19 PM

My 12speed mountain bike has more torque.

ridic2002 06-05-2003 05:03 PM

Dude my radio controlled car has more torque than that............SAD

macho_mike21 06-05-2003 05:12 PM

he would have more torque if he just took out the engine, leaned forward, and spun the wheels with his bare hands. Alot less irritating than a fart can too...

rwe62382 06-05-2003 07:55 PM

my little brothers sit and ride jeep that runs on 6v would take that si

STAGED 06-05-2003 09:08 PM

Was Covington's price too high? What should the repair normally cost?

Damemorder 06-05-2003 09:15 PM

Staged, i think you may have replied to the wrong topic....

my scooter is faster, and i make a way cooler engine noise

russianpolarbear 06-05-2003 09:17 PM

Shit you guys need scooters??? Hook a tow rope on my back and ill pull more then that thing... 8)

Jim W 06-05-2003 10:54 PM

russianpolarbear 06-05-2003 11:57 PM

Hmm what wont take it????? Ooo I know a 1.3 liter Geo Metro Hatchback!

Damemorder 06-06-2003 12:56 AM

i think my buddies 85 lesabre might get beat
its got a 305, but only 1 &7 fire...
he must have like 13hp
car weighs like 4800
it would be close

brnvs 06-06-2003 07:49 AM

Dang, One little comment about the Civic Si sure opened up a can of worms! :) Actually in a related comment, i was playing a bit of leapfrog yesterday with an Eagle Talon. We were even at the light but unfortunately it was only a short distance to the next light and the traffic was backed up from that one. I had to move over behind him to take the entrance ramp onto the Interstate, and thought he seemed to be moving pretty slow on the curve. Another thing that impresses me about the Bonneville- i can corner pretty well for it being such a heavy car. Those 225/60-16's do their job. :)

I started to document this under http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...pic.php?t=4993 and the situation has gotten worse:

early May: Traction off/ABS/SES lights coming on sporatically. Brought it in, $1100 for a new Pressure Modulator Valve (apparently the most expensive part of the ABS system).

two weeks later: Traction off/ABS/SES lights coming on sporatically. $500 for new speed sensor on right front wheel.

two days later: SES light coming on at times. Brought it in and they said "old codes are reseting, all codes related to problems you had before you brought it in the first time. We cleared the history codes and now the light hasn't come on again." They had the balls to charge me $80 to tell me nothing was wrong with my car, except the codes needed clearing (which unless i'm mistaken, should have been done EVERYTIME i brought it in for work).

Last time i was there the service guy finally said, "If it comes on again i won't charge you for the diagnostic- and i'll do my best to get you a loaner". That's a good thing since i'm a single guy with a single car who is sick of asking his friends for favors.

Guess what happened this morning? Yup, SES light came on again. WTF??

Rant over, let the comments begin.

PS. Even with SES/Traction Off/ABS lights flashing rapidly, my sick and wounded car has more torque than a Civic Si.

ridic2002 06-06-2003 10:44 AM

I can take that Civic with the car from the Flintstones............Bare feet and all. I hate Civics !!

willwren 06-06-2003 12:35 PM

The PMV change was about on par for a dealer price. The sensor, however, seems a bit steep. That's a much easier, quicker job, and a cheap part.

If that dealer charged you to reset codes that he should have done before, call Buick Customer service and lodge a complaint against the Dealerships Service Department. They'll do the leg-work for you. I did this with a Chevy dealer once, and they bent over backwards to make it right. The dealership called me back to apologize about 10 minutes after I got off the phone with 1-800-Chev-usa.

And DON'T do anything else until you find out what codes it was throwing. Call the dealership, have them pull our the records, and tell you the codes over the phone. If you don't trust them, or don't want to bother, go to a local parts store. Most will scan you for free, in the hopes that you'll order parts from them.

Civic si?  The maggots eating the dead raccoon in my cedar tree have more torque than that!

willwren 06-06-2003 03:30 PM

Gross is right. Jseabert and I just got that bastard out of the tree (if you followed my earlier kill stories, you'll know what this is all about). I think I left him a couple days to long.....but I had to get him down today. Gotta hottie comin' over for the weekend, and with the 90°+ weather here, it was gonna be RIPE tomorrow. :puke:

96AZSSEi 06-06-2003 03:41 PM

maybe she'll like the sweet smell of rotting carcass! :dead:

willwren 06-06-2003 04:18 PM

She is the outdoorsy type, but somehow I think that may be a bit extreme!

Whew....we double bagged that sucker. I'm gonna have to 4-bag it. DAMN!

96AZSSEi 06-06-2003 04:23 PM

lilpooky 06-06-2003 07:35 PM

no way! that was so gross. we're having chinese!

Burgundy_Boat 06-08-2003 11:16 PM

umm... 160 HP from 2.0L in 2003... remind your local ricer that the old 1.6L Si engine put out 160 HP... and that was in the mid 90's... something doesn't add up here... more displacement yet the same power??? talk about your rice engenering...

It has been soem time, but if I remember correctly, the front wheel speed sensor is sealed within the front wheel bearing, the the whole wheel bearing assembly would need to be replaced. That part is not that cheap from a dealer.. I might be worng.

The PMV is a very expensive part, and I replaced a zillion of them at teh dealer..The speed sensor needing replaced ralong withthe PMV is very rare, but I have seen both parts bad, only once..So techinically so far I can think it is possible for the dealer is not screweing you....

Having someone charge you 80 bucks after these two parts were replaced is completely screwed up, and they stuck it to you with no lube if this is the case.. Also I see you STILL are getting the code.. SHEW! This part is outragious.
BRNVS.. I read your horror story about Covington Buick.. Look, I used to work there as a tech for about 6 years...It has been a few years since I worked there, but I still know all the old guys including the service manager.. Can you give me the name of the tech who worked on your car? I want to see which guy screwed you like that.
I might be able to help... There are some good honest guys who still work there, and not all of them do shotty work like that.

Hey good idea. I don;t want to stirr anything up either, but since I know those guys, I might be able to help.. BRNVS.. Shoot me a PM :)

Jim W 06-09-2003 03:41 PM

rwe62382 06-09-2003 09:10 PM

hey guys were would be a good place to go in reading to get my car lookrd at it needs help in that area with the ses light comming on and thee traction system not turning on until the car hit 190F and i know that the iac vale is shot so any help would be good :(

brnvs 06-09-2003 11:42 PM

Well it's back in the shop- 4'th time in the last 4-5 weeks. This time they gave me a loaner car and said they'd at least scan the codes for free though. first two times were brake related codes, the third time was "camshaft sensor error" and "engine running lean" codes. They cleared them and so we'll know tomorrow what the latest is.

$1700 so far....i know, it's really not bad if it got everything fixed, but think of all the MODS i could have bought with that! Now they'll have to wait :x

Custom88 06-10-2003 01:01 AM

Guys, I know ya hate Civics, I used to too, but I do have some respect for them. I have a friend with a 93 and it moves pretty damn good... his only has a few minor mods and it does 8.4 0-60.. it keeps up with my Riv pretty decently and my riv has the supercharged Series II.
