Default Add a 2004 Grand Prix to my kill sheet....

Hey all,

Just had an amazing drag race with a black 04 GP....
I'm sitting at a red light, this car pulls up behind me, then pulls around beside me.
The guy is looking at my car, sort of sizing it up. I've got my 'better half' Jen in the passanger seat, I asked her what it said on the side of the car, but she said she didn't see anything. It was really dark out, and it was a black 04 GP. So anyways the other driver and I make eye contact and he sort of nods at me and then goes back to watching the light. I knew that there is always a advance for left turning traffic, and novice drivers tend to "flinch" when they see any green what-so-ever. This guy played it cool, not a movement from his tires.
The light goes green and we both fly out of the gate. We right beside each other. No one is making any gains. Nose on nose.... until we hit 90kph, then I start to over take him, by 110kph he'* at my rear doors. It wasn't much past 125kph when he hit his brakes and gave up. I did the same. He tucked in behind me, and then we hit the highway. I was expecting him to pull out and try to pass but he played it cool. He just reminded a nice distance behind me and never tried to over take me. Cool customer.

In any case it was a good drag race and I'm really glad my 97 managed to hold upto a 04 GP. It couldn't have been SCed, but still it'* a nice kill in anycase.

If he hung with you that well, I doubt he was NA.

I base this on the fact that I just handed an O4 GP (the new ugly style) his freaking *** on Christmas eve.

You actually think he could have been SCed? Really?

I thought the older style 03 & below were faster then us (96-99 SSEi'*) due to less weight and the way their tranny is geared.... so I just assumed a Series III SC engine in a GP would be a good bit faster then my 97. So I figured that the only way I beat him was because he was an NA, not an SC.

Anyone got the specs on the Series III NA engine and the weight of a GP for comparion?

You should have beaten a NA by a larger margin than that. The wieght difference between us and them is offset by the difference in hp and tq......the Series 2'* lose about 5 of each because of the U-bend.

I'm just betting it was a S3 GTP that didn't know what he was doing, or too tight on a new drivetrain.

<shurgs> SC or NA... dunno.... I'm not sure what I beat. But I'd rather beat an 04 GP NA that was trying, then an 04 GP SCed that wasn't trying.

But the car did look freshly squeezed...... the reflection off the paint looked like it had never been thru a wash, or spent a day on our salty roads.
Jen didn't remember seeing anything on the side of the car, I asked her specifically for a GT or GTP logo, and she couldn't see anything... but again it was dark.
I should also mention my car wasn't exactly light.... I had a ton of groceries in the trunk, and a full tank of fuel, plus a passanger. The guy in the 04 GP was solo.
I'll have to take a look at some GTPs and compare their front styling to what I remember of this car.... as it looked in my rearview.... hehe

UPDATE:

---Specs on the 04 GP---
Curb Weight 3480lbs
3.8L V6 NA 200HP @ 5200 RPM / 225(lb-ft) @ 4000 RPM
3.8L V6 SC 260HP @ 5200 RPM / 280(lb-ft) @ 3600 RPM
Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 'Comp G' - V6 3.8L supercharged (260 hp) 4A + ABS
0-60 7.12sec 1/4mile 15.47sec

---Specs on the 97 SSEi---

Curb Weight 3548lbs
3.8L V6 SC 240HP @ 5200RPM / 280(lb-ft) @ 3600 RPM

And just for note, the only mods I've done to my car are gator belts, K&N filter, wires, and she'* just had a full service and tune up not 2 weeks ago.

I heard the 04 GTP'* are a bit slower than the older GTP'* because of weight. Considering you have a lighter version of the SSEi, and the distance you beat him by, it could have been blown.

I think the 04'* run 15 flat or so.

You run probably 14.8 to 14.9 stock

According to Carpoint.com the GTPs run mid 15'*....... hrm.... I didn't think my 97 SSEi stock was in the high 14'*... I figured it for mid 15'*. Maybe it was SCed...

I know that the previous generation of GP was the same speed basically NA as a bonneville or other similar car was */C. I don't think any Bonneville'* were faster than mid 15'* stock in the quarter mile.

97-03 GTPs could be massaged into 14'* stock, with some removal, and good launches, and weather. They are lighter, and the tranny is slightly different.

Nice kill. The 04'* GP'* are nice looking cars. And the NA Series3'* have some serious spunk to them. I'm surprised you pulled away like you did, even with a supercharger, the guy had one up on you as aposed to the engine. But nice kill. Just whatever you do, don't mess around with the GTP Comp G, you'll get your *** handed to you, that'* supercharged Series3. I have managed to pull out some wins against one or two older grand prix'*, non turbo of course, I'm not that stupid. I want to really purchase the SRT-4 we have hanging around at the local dodge dealership. I mean come on, stock turbo and intercooler, and 0-60 in the 5'*, and I'm not sure what the run stock for 1/4'* but I am sure it is quick. We have a few new GP'* around here, but i have not seen a GTP Comp G though, wouldn't mind having one in my driveway though.
